I dropped over to the CNA campus on Prince Philip Drive today to check out their new Video Game Art and Design digs. What a great spot!
Janice and Greg were kind enough to take me through what they do over there and show me the facilities, as well as talking about their ambitions for the program and the community at large. These folks have some big ideas, and I’m glad to have them coming to our first meetup to talk about the state of the industry in the province.
I’ll be interested to find out if any of the devs in the province have looked at the program. In particular, the “capstone” project, which can apparently take the form of a 6-week internship, seems like a valuable proposition. If what I saw today is any indication, this could be a great resource for developers in the province.
I’m pleased to announce our first meetup will take place at 7:30PM on Tuesday, April 18th at Common Ground on Harvey Road.
We’ll kick things off with a panel discussion, which I (Mike) will be moderating. We’ll be joined by some special guests from the local community to discuss the State of the Game Development Industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.
We’d love to see you all, so come down, meet some people, and listen in on the panel!
Update: We have now filled our panel and this call is closed.
For our first meetup, we’re going to have a panel talking about the state of the game industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. We have a couple of panelists, but we still need a couple more folks to talk about the challenges and successes of the industry’s development thus far. If that’s you, or if you know someone who might be interested, drop us a line!
For those of you seeking funding, the Canada Media Fund, a major funding source for digital media – including game development – has just announced its 2017-2018 budget, guidelines, and deadlines.
Just got the confirmation, Gamedev NL is now officially set up as a member at Common Ground! This means we can start meeting in person, hopefully starting in mid-April.
With that out of the way, we’re looking for a few good panelists to talk about the state of the game development industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. If you know anyone, contact us.
Also, a reminder that we’re still looking for sponsors. If you or your organization would like to offer support to this group, please email us.
Today I toured the Common Ground office on Harvey Road. Tomorrow I’m checking out NIFCO on King’s Road. Hoping to have a venue for our first meetup figured out in the next week or so.
We still need someone to deliver a talk for our first meetup. If you know someone who might be interested, please do drop us a line!
GDNL is still looking for sponsors to help cover the costs of a meetup. If you or your company would like to offer support, why not send us an email?
We have our first sponsor! Perfect Minute Games will be an Epic sponsor, providing $25/mth to the operation of the group.
Full disclosure: Mike Burton is the person behind both Perfect Minute Games and Gamedev NL, so this was a particularly easy sponsorship to get. But this brings us significantly closer to being able to rent a space in town for regular meetups!
